Croatia has some of the best festivals on offer, and this summer sees some of our favourite artists headline. We get the lowdown on the five best festivals you need to visit for 2013
Croatia lies along the coast of the Adriatic Sea and boasts destination spots rich in culture, with breath-taking views and beautiful, crystal-clear waters. But aside from it’s pull as a picturesque and sun-soaked holiday destination perfect for island-hopping and sun lounging, Croatia’s offering of summer festivals has built it a reputation that is completely unparalleled – and for good reason. The past few years have seen Croatia rise to become one of the hottest new party destinations, with festivals popping up on the island every year and people flocking from all over to get in on the action. Another massive pull for Croatia is that it’s also extremely cheap, meaning that you can party hard on a budget – a real rarity these days but one that’s always more than welcome. But with so many to choose from, which festival is best? We give our lowdown on our top five festivals in Croatia. The hardest part will be choosing which one to go for
3 – 5 July, Zrce Beach, Novalja, Pag Island
Hideout Festival is only in its third year, but it has already become THE go-to festival for sun-seeking electronic music lovers worldwide.
Set in a hedonistic beachside location on the Island of Pag, with the stunning mountainous backdrop, Hideout Festival takes place across several arenas on Zrce Beach, both inside and out. Expect to see raucous pool parties happening in the day time, and open air festivals happening after the sun goes down and way into the early hours.
Most accommodation is set in the nearby town of Novalja, and you’ll find a free, regular shuttle bus that will go between the two points throughout the day. Novalja itself also has lots to offer in the way of bars, restaurants and attractions though, so you’ll not find yourself running out of things to do.
As Hideout Festival grows, expect to see bigger, better arenas, bigger pool parties and more events outside of the normal programme. And with rave reviews for its previous sell-out events, it’s sure to say that this year is set to have a few surprises up its sleeve too.
If you’re into your house music, love Ibiza and you’re more suited cutting up the dancefloors in trendy east London hangouts, then this one is definitely for you.

The Garden festival
3 – 10 July, The Garden Tisno, Petrica Glava
There’s no doubt that The Garden Festival has become one of the best and most loved festivals in Croatia. Now in its 8th Season, last year saw The Garden Festival move from its home in Petrcane, to a new venue just up the road in Tisno.
The new site is nestled in the rugged Dalmation coastline with its own bay of glittering Adriatic waters, boasting a true festival feel while retaining the intimacy for which it is loved. Set in an idyllic coastal location, the Tisno site has everything you could want from a festival, including numerous stages, a stunning beach and a Funktion 1 sound system to ensure crisp music all night long.
2013’s festival is entitled ‘The Next Step’ as the bods behind The Garden Festival plan to push things forward and enrich and refine everything to make everyone’s experience as enjoyable as possible. But while some things have changed you can always rely on Garden Festival for a good vibe, a perfect mix of chilled and party atmosphere and a fantastic crowd. And don’t forget its twice-daily Argonaughty boat parties that have become somewhat legendary, though it’s good to note that these are well worth booking in advance.
Psst… Fancy extending your trip a little longer? Do a double whammy and take advantage of the Garden Festival and Electric Elephant discounted group ticket. Electric Elephant runs directly after The Garden Festival, so extend your trip and make it count!

Electric Elephant festival
11 – 15 July 2013, The Garden Tisno, Petrica Glava
Electric Elephant follows on directly after The Garden Festival and boasts five days and five nights of sun, sea and music in a truly idyllic location on the Dalmation coast.
Like The Garden, Electric Elephant relocated to Tisno last year, a secluded paradise with its very own private, sandy bay, halfway between Zadar and Split airports.
Choose whether you want to stay in one of the on-site apartments or Indian Shikar tents, or if you’re really feeling adventurous, why not pitch up your own tent in one of the 120 spaces.
Spend the days lazing on the beach with a cocktail or cool off with a dip in the sea while the DJs pump out a Balearic soundtrack all day long. When it comes to nighttime though, that’s when it really comes alive and you’ll find all arenas teaming with revelers.
More than just a festival, Electric Elephant is a holiday, an escape, a getaway and an adventure all mixed into one, that invokes the original spirit of Ibiza of the seventies and early eighties.

18 – 22 July, The Garden Tisno, Petrica Glava
Held on the same site as The Garden Festival and Electric Elephant, but harnessing a totally different vibe altogether, Soundwave Croatia is rapidly emerging as one of the finest boutique festivals that Croatia has to offer.
Spread over five days, the bulk of music acts happen across the weekend, so this is a great festival to go for if you’re struggling to fit your trip around work commitments.
Previous billed artists have included acts such as De La Soul, Roots Manuva and Gentleman’s Dub Club and you’ll find that the line-up here attracts a slightly more mature and musically tuned crowd.
Again, accommodation can be found in the on-site apartments, in the luxury boutique camping or just around the bay in Tisno fishing village. With the stunning surrounding views and chilled beach bar, alongside the open-air nightclub, you’ll definitely find some fun ways to while away your festival days.
